Safeguarding Elders and Dependent Adults Against Abuse

Elders and Dependent Adults are often vulnerable to various types of scams and abuses. Participants will learn about various types of abuse, including romance scams and financial abuse, and learn ways to help protect members of our community from abuse.

This course is appropriate for professionals, caregivers, family members or any person who supports seniors and dependent adults.

Learning Objectives

  1. Participants will be able to identify three common myths about elder abuse.
  2. Participants will be able to identify two red flags in identifying a potential romance scam.
  3. Participants will be able to list three services that may assist an older victim of an internet romance scam based on identified needs.
  4. Participants will be able to recognize three types of schemes involved telemarketing and online financial abuse.
  5. Participants will be able to list two strategies for the elderly to avoid/protect against abuse.

Registration Deadline: May 14, 2018

$40.00 per person, includes continental breakfast and lunch. Late or onsite registration cost is $50.00. Persons age 60 years and older can register free. A donation of $25.00 is requested.

Lunch is guaranteed if registration is submitted by May 14.

Course meets the qualifications for 7 hours of continuing education credit for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs and/or LEPs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences.

Hospice of San Luis Obispo County is approved by the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists to sponsor continuing education for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs and /or LEPs. Hospice of San Luis Obispo County maintains responsibility for this program/course and its content.

Participants must attend all 6 hours and complete a program evaluation to receive credit. No partial credit given. Certificates will be issued at the end of the presentation.

Instructors:

Paul Greenwood is a Deputy District Attorney V for the Office of the District Attorney’s Elder Abuse Unit in San Diego, California.

Debbie Deem is an FBI Victim Specialist who works with issues related to international fraud schemes including romance and lottery crimes.

Lisa Lambert is a licensed attorney and Wealth Advisor for Rabobank. She is a Certified Trust and Financial Advisor (CTFA).
